Alyona Rassohyna secured a guillotine choke and submitted Stamp Fairtex in the final seconds of the three-round main event, which aired on Friday, Feb. 5.

But Fairtex is claiming that she didn’t tap.

In a post made to her Instagram account, Fairtex stated:

“I got caught in a guillotine, but I still can breath. I tried to reach with my hand to push my opponent’s face but it got stucked on her elbow. The referee thought I tapped.

“Anyway I have to say I fought with my full heart and did my best. I would like to say thank you to everyone who support me. Sorry that I make you disapponted. I would like to ask for a rematch, to make it all clear. Congratulations to my opponent, I respect the referee’s decision.”

It was a strange series of events at ONE: Unbreakable III as Fairtex obviously tapped Rassohyna’s right shoulder and Olivier Coste stepped in to end the contest. But Fairtex stood up and immediately protested Coste’s decision to stop the bout, seemingly exclaiming that she didn’t tap.

As for The Body Lock’s Patrick Auger and Drake Riggs, there’s no arguing that Fairtex tapped. Riggs says. “This was 100% a tap, no question about it. It was about a clear as tap as you can get.”

But it leads to a number of important questions, including whether ONE Championship will consider overturning the decision, the same way that they have done so in the past for controversies involving its star fighters.

Whether it’s erasing Giorgio Petrosyan’s stunning defeat to Petchmorrakot Petchyindee in 2019 or bending the suplex rules, ONE Championship has a history of getting involved in controversial outcomes.

According to the filings obtained by The Body Lock from Singapore’s ARCA system, for the year 2019, the promotion posted an after-tax loss of around 131 million Singapore dollars (S$), or roughly $97 million USD using a conversion rate of 1 USD to 0.74 Singapore Dollars. This brings the accumulated losses of the company to around $228 million USD. While revenue did increase from S$ 37.4 million to S$ 62.4 million in 2019, net cash flow from operating activities decreased by roughly S$58 million during the same time period from S$- 78.4 million to S$ -136.6 million. Total assets for the organization were more than halved in 2019 as well, dropping from S$199.8 million in 2018 to S$98.7 million.

Key financial metrics outline the company’s current precarious position. Return on equity (ROE), a financial calculation that is often used to compare a corporation to peers in its industry, dropped over 100% to a staggering -158.29% for 2019. Although we don’t know the exact ratio for promotions like the UFC and Bellator, it isn’t a far stretch to assume that both of those companies have a positive ROE calculation (especially the UFC). ONE Championship’s current ratio, which looks at a firm’s ability to pay debts due in a year or less, decreased from 19.63 in 2018 to 5.93 in 2019. In most situations, a current ratio above 1 is considered healthy and much more than that can indicate a company is using its assets inefficiently. That being said, such a large drop in a one-year time span is something investors would want to keep an eye on moving forward.

As reported by Bloody Elbow’s John S. Nash in more detail, losses for ONE Championship is nothing new. The company files under Group One Holding PTE LTD and includes wholly-owned subsidiaries including One Elite Agency PTE LTD, eSports PTE LTD, One China PTE LTD, among others. As the company has continued to expand into other areas and build its universe of superheroes, the promotion has struggled to become profitable.

The organization seems to be aware of the optics. In an interview with Pro Sports Asia, ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong acknowledged that the company was operating at a loss but stated that he believed ONE Championship would be profitable by the end of 2021. In the same interview, Sityodtong also claimed that ONE Championship would eventually surpass the NFL, NBA, MLB, and others in terms of its total worth.

Unless the financials from 2020 have drastically changed from the previous years, however, that would seem to be a tall order. Although the promotion was able to raise around $70 million in funding last year, it was also forced to cut around 20% of company staff. The coronavirus also compelled the company to cancel several events over a period of months, most likely affecting its bottom line. As ONE continues to find its footing in an emerging market for the MMA industry, the organization will have to pivot quickly if it doesn’t want to continually rely on investors to help finance it in the future.

The debate over the greatest fighter of all time continues to be rampant ever since Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement at UFC 254 in October.

Jon Jones has been a vocal critic of the Nurmagomedov GOAT shouts as he believes he has done more than enough to be considered the outright contender for the accolade.

Most recently, the former 205-pound king claimed becoming a two-weight champion with his planned move up to heavyweight would be one way to end the debate.

As far as Johnson is concerned, he would agree that Jones is the current GOAT as he believes “Bones” defeats everyone at light heavyweight or heavyweight.

The matter changes entirely if Johnson was his size, however.

“Yeah, I would,” Johnson told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani when asked if he would pick Jones as the GOAT. “If somebody asked me, ‘why would you vote for Jon?’ Because I believe he can beat everybody at light heavyweight and I truly believe he can beat everybody at heavyweight.

“I mean, don’t get me wrong, if I was Jon Jones’ size, I’d probably fuck him up, because I know mentally, physically and skillfully, I would push him. I’ve pushed people before, and I know I would push him.”

The former UFC flyweight champion has long steered away from comparing himself to Jones or stating who would win in a fight so this was certainly out of left field from Johnson.

When asked by Helwani if him thinking he can beat Jones at the same size would mean he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, “Mighty Mouse” clarified his statement.

“I said I would go out and push him — doesn’t mean I’m going to win the fight,” Johnson explained. “I’m saying if I was the same size as him and I have all my attributes that I have now, my mental capacity, my discipline, my skillset — I know I would go in there and push him.

“Everybody else will say, ‘of course, DJ. I would do the same thing.’ Nah, I don’t know. I’ve proven in my fights when I’m down, I’m going to push. I’m going to try to get it done.”

Meanwhile, Johnson could be set to win a major title in two different promotions as his flyweight title fight with ONE champion Adriano Moraes has been scheduled for February 24.

In a Facebook post, the 38-year-old notified fans of his decision to return to the cage, and why inking a multi-fight deal with ONE Championship was the favorable option.

“I’d like to announce my commitment to ONE Championship,” DeBlass stated.

“Life sometimes has twists and turns we don’t expect. This pandemic brought all of us to places we never expect to be. Yet this pandemic also forced ourself to look long and hard in the mirror at who we are. I remember the first time I went to corner Garry Lee Tonon, the owner of ONE, Chatri Sityodtong, approached me like he knew me for years. I was so impressed with him, his staff and the fans. I watched the event, the fighters, the respect and immediately loved MMA again. I loved the code of the samurai, and no organization emulates this code like ONE.”

“I am not claiming to come back and knock anyone out, or even win. I simply want to inspire everyone and remind everyone that this life is a fight, everyday we must fight for what we want, and it’s never easy. I promise you that I will give my best, always and forever. At 38, I can ride into the sunset with never testing myself again. Yet, this opportunity is simply a God send, and it’s my duty to accept. After amassing a professional record of 9-2, DeBlass retired from MMA in 2013 as he wanted to solely focus on his jiu-jitsu while committing more time to coach up and coming athletes such as the aforementioned Garry Tonon.

A veteran of both the UFC and Bellator, the Ricardo Almeida black belt last competed at light heavyweight. Chatri Sityodtong later revealed that DeBlass would likely compete at heavyweight or light heavyweight.

The official ONE Championship fighter rankings are determined by a panel that the promotion introduced as “independent,” although members include current ONE Championship executives Rich Franklin and Miesha Tate.

The panel has been asked to consider wins, losses, most recent performances, and quality of opponents when determining the rankings.

Rankings for five of the promotion’s nine mixed martial arts divisions are now available. Currently, there are no rankings for heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, and welterweight fighters.

ONE was among the first MMA promotions to experience scheduling difficulties following the emerging pandemic of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, in early 2020.

In February, ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced that the promotion would move its once-scheduled Chongqing, China, show to Jakarta, Indonesia. The event, which was renamed following the venue switch, was set to feature a flyweight title bout between champion Adriano Moraes and all-time great Demetrious Johnson.

Just days later, ONE was forced to hold its February 28 King of the Jungle event in Singapore behind closed doors and without fans in attendance, as concerns over the coronavirus led to restrictions on large gatherings of people.

ONE then postponed its March 20 event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, until June 26.

On Tuesday, Singapore’s government announced a new series of measures aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19 that appear to put ONE’s upcoming shows in jeopardy, despite their previous steps to work around the pandemic.

According to the Straits Times, “all other entertainment outlets will be closed from Thursday (March 26) 11:59 pm till April 30,” likely preventing ONE from securing a venue to promote their events. The outlet continued, “The measures on entertainment venues cover bars and entertainment venues like night clubs, discos, cinemas, theatres, and karaoke outlets.

“Other public venues such as retail malls, museums and attractions, where contact is more transient, may remain open. But operators must make sure the venue does not have more than one person per 16 sq m of usable space… Groups must not exceed 10 persons. Indoor and outdoor shows within attractions and open atrium sales events are suspended,” effectively preventing any mixed martial arts bout from being able to take place.

Those who violate the government’s rules purportedly face “fines of up to $10,000 or jail of up to six months or both.”

Singapore’s top soccer (football) league, the Singapore Premier League, tried a similar method to ONE Championship of holding events in the midst of COVID-19. The league’s games were “played behind closed doors” in an effort to stop the spread of the virus, until recently.

In a Tuesday memo to affiliates, the league wrote, “[t]he Multi-Ministry Taskforce today has mandated that all events and mass gathering including sporting events must be deferred or cancelled, regardless of size.”

Additionally, per the Straits Times, Singapore to the unprecedented step of effectively closing its borders, preventing the visitation of “tourists and short-term visitors.”

The move is a death knell of sorts for an international MMA promotion whose roster largely hails from outside of Singapore.

The government of Singapore enacted the ban in order to curb the arrival of COVID-19 from those beyond its borders, as the country reportedly suffered “49 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Tuesday, including 32 imported cases.”

When reached for comment about these developments by The Body Lock, a ONE Championship representative said the promotion would “refer you to these statements made by Chatri [Sityodtong],” including the ONE boss’ March 12 and March 15 Facebook posts in which Sityodtong announces the promotion’s decision to move its shows to Singapore and hold them without audiences.

The representative added, “To clarify, the plan is to have 4 closed-door, audience-free events in Singapore and our May 29 ONE Infinity 1 event in Manila is targeted to be open for audience. However, it is still very much depending on the situation of COVID-19,” concluding that there were “[n]o further updates on our end for now.”

Neither Sityodtong nor ONE have addressed what these new, additional measures enacted by Singapore mean for the promotion’s upcoming shows.

On Wednesday, however, Sityodtong took to Facebook in a lengthy post about the measures’ effect on his own gym, EVOLVE MMA.

Sityodtong wrote, “As many of you might have heard in the news yesterday, the Singapore Government has elevated its efforts to extinguish the spread of the coronavirus by issuing an order for businesses like EVOLVE to close for 1 month. In compliance with this order, EVOLVE will close temporarily from March 27 until April 30.”

The ONE Chairman and CEO then praised the Singaporean government for “doing the right thing,” writing, “As painful as it is for everyone at EVOLVE to go without martial arts in our daily lives for a few weeks, I am thankful to the Singapore Government for doing the right thing to protect all of us. Let us all unite and play our part responsibly in stopping this coronavirus. Let us all stay safe and healthy by practicing social distancing and good hygiene. Above all, let us cherish this break to focus on our loved ones, our health, and everything that we never have time to do. It is a gentle reminder to pause, rest, and reflect.”

Parr talked openly about his hip after retirement, which needed an extended period of time to fully recover after more than two decades of gruesome Thai training sessions and beatdowns. It now looks as if that issue has been dealt with, and the multiple-time world champion is ready to make a return to the ring he once called home.

“After some time off it has allowed my hip to recover so I can concentrate on getting fit and strong again. Life really is amazing.”

John Wayne Parr was present at the most recent ONE Championship card in Singapore, as his student Rocky Ogden was competing for the chance to earn strawweight gold. Throughout fight week the man they call “The Gunslinger” was teasing a return to the sport, regularly posting photographs in ONE Championship gloves.

Parr is just one win short of a monumental 100th career victory. His record now stands at 99 victories, 34 losses, and 1 draw.

On Friday, ONE founder, Chairman, and CEO Chatri Sityodtong took to Facebook to announce that the promotion had decided to postpone the upcoming ONE: Heart of Heroes event previously scheduled to take place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on March 20.

The event is now set for June 26, provided safety threats from the coronavirus subside.

Sityodtong revealed that he and the ONE team had discussed “all options with the Vietnam Government,” whose country had been largely successful at managing the spread of the coronavirus at its onset thanks to many proactive, internationally applauded efforts, including a viral song about hygiene.

In recent days, Vietnam has seen an increase in coronavirus cases. On Friday, the country reported its first new case of COVID-19 in over three weeks; a government minister and a web of people who had come in contact with her were placed under quarantine following the arrival of several coronavirus-infected passengers on a London plane in Hanoi.

The country instituted a ban on visa-free travel from eight high-risk European countries on Monday.

The novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, originated in Wuhan, China. The virus is a highly contagious respiratory illness that causes symptoms of fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and respiratory problems.

In extreme cases, the virus can cause pneumonia, organ failure, and even death, according to the Center for Disease Control.

According to The New York Times, the total number of worldwide cases has surpassed 110,200, with at least 3,835 global deaths. Countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, and Iran have been the hardest hit in Asia, while Italy, France, and Germany have reported sizable numbers in Europe. The United States only recently began seeing reported cases, but new reports have continued to crop up at a rate to be expected of such an infectious disease.

Sityodtong, explaining the reason for the postponement, noted that the “safety of our fans, athletes, staff, partners, and public are the highest priority” for the promotion.

This is not the first ONE Championship event that has been affected by the coronavirus. In February, ONE announced that an upcoming Chinese event featuring a title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes would be moved to Indonesia, and just two weeks ago, ONE held their Singapore event without an audience.

One of the Vietnam events fighters, Bi Nguyen, took to Twitter to voice her sadness at the situation.

Calling her past three months in Thailand an “emotional rollercoaster,” Nguyen said ONE postponed the event due to “traveling issues; it’s hard to book flights for athletes right now because of the coronavirus.”

ONE Championship’s next event will be ONE: Infinity 1, the aforementioned Johnson-Moraes event that landed in Indonesia, on April 10.
