Both fighters are in the cage.

Round one

Conor storms to the middle of the cage. Opens with a spinning back kick to the body. Leg kick from McGregor. High kick. He’s establishing kickboxing distance. Low kick now. Left hand. He’s coming after Poirier hard and fast. Another low kick. Misses with his 1-2. Poirier lands a calf kick now. Poirier connects with a strong right hand. Great fight already and we’re only one minute in.

McGregor going after the leg this time. He’s slamming the left kick into Poirier’s right leg. Again. He lands a left hand to the side of Poirier’s head. Poirier trading now and lands some hard punches. He blitzes forward and lands more hard punches. He’s tagging McGregor on the feet again. Great trade from Poirier and now he’s pushing McGregor back. He’s undoubtedly winning the boxing exchanges.

Now Poirier advances and progresses to a single-leg attempt. McGregor’s going for a guillotine choke in response but it’s not tight and he can’t keep Poirier in his guard now. Poirier is trying to posture up and get out of the choke. McGregor still holding it. Poirier escapes. Sits up. Hard elbow from Poirier on top. He’s trying to pass McGregor’s guard but McGregor maintains a strong Z-guard and then pushes away. Poirier falls back into full guard. Hard elbows from Poirier. Massive damage from top position.

McGregor’s been on the bottom for far too long and this is an outcome that only suits Poirier who is favored to pull away from McGregor as the fight goes on. Hard elbows coming from the top. More hard ground and pound. McGregor responds with an upkick. McGregor’s taking so much damage and Herb Dean is starting to watch this one very closely. The pace has been ridiculous. Poirier turns to Herb Dean and complains about McGregor holding his gloves. McGregor uses the chance to stand up. He swings a big left hand and Poirier swings a punch of his own. They both miss but McGregor rolls his ankle and seemingly snaps his shin/leg? What just happened? McGregor’s in pain. He shells up and Poirier tries to finish the fight. That’s the end of the round.

McGregor can’t continue. The doctor calls it. What an unbelievable end to what was an absolutely fantastic fight for as long as it lasted.

If you’ve been following Conor’s rise from the undercards to the mainstream consciousness, you’d know that every step of the way had lore, mystique, and tremendous hype surrounding it. This is largely due to the Irishman’s remarkable ability to market himself and generate intrigue about what incredible thing he’s gonna do next. He was combat sports entertainment personified– reinventing the game in ways that can only be described as “legendary.”  From his UFC debut in 2013 to his double champ status in 2016, McGregor has turned the entire MMA world into Conor-mania as he strikes the perfect balance between overwhelming hype and outstanding results over and over again.

But as of late, the results haven’t been living up to the hype.

MMA is a “what have you done for me lately” business. As harsh as that may sound, this is the name of the fight game. And if you just look at his last five years in the sport, McGregor has only fought six times (including his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr.) and has lost three, with those losses coming by way of stoppage (2 KO/TKOs, 1 Sub). This is Conor McGregor– the Irish Supernova who dubbed himself “The face of the fight game”– getting beaten so badly the referee had to save his life.

I know there are many nuances that happen in a fight and we cannot simply judge a man’s potential and ability solely based on optics and numbers, but we’re talking about the perception of the world here– from hardcore fanatics to casual viewers to people who call MMA “That UFC thing”. That mixed crowd is terribly unforgiving as it is swiftly forgetful. Just the social media pulse alone is riddled with Tweets and posts and comments dismissing Conor as a has-been and is a shell of what he once was– pointing out that the Irish striker is nothing but a pale imitation of his glory days. Oddsmakers are pitting him as an underdog against Poirier— only the third time in his UFC career.

So this begs the question, what will happen to Conor if he loses at UFC 264?

The short answer is nothing, really. Even with a loss at UFC 264– no matter where he ends up in the rankings– Conor will always be the UFC’s cash cow until he decides to hang his gloves for good. Remember, just a few weeks ago, fan-favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was riding a streak of four fights without a win but still clinched a co-main event spot of UFC on ESPN 24– and he’s not even in the same stratosphere as Conor’s star power. McGregor’s job security is rock solid while his financial earnings have set him and his family for life.

The long answer is, well, his legacy will be in question. We all know that Conor doesn’t really have to fight anymore. Prizefighting– in its purest sense– is a sport for the poor. No one else is willing to risk his life for money than those who are desperate to find a better life above the dirt of poverty. Conor is years away from his days of cashing welfare checks from the government. So what’s he fighting for now? Legacy. Despite the recent naysayers and people dismissing Conor’s ability in the cage, it can still be argued that the Irishman’s Legacy is already set in stone, having achieved things no one’s ever done before. But that doesn’t mean he cannot further this legacy beyond what he’s already achieved. Beating Poirier and pushing forward to a possible second lightweight title reign will further cement his place as one of the greatest — if not the greatest– ever.

And believe it or not, that might still be Conor’s ultimate goal after all his years and achievements in fighting.

“Gotta think so [Poirier beats McGregor], right? I think he was so convincing and I think Conor has got to the point, he doesn’t want to admit this and his fans don’t want to admit this but it has happened not only with him but many other athletes but when they make the amount of money he made and when they get the amount of fame that he’s had, it’s fucking hard to go and train like a mad man. Right?

“That’s something that we do, even me being older now like I can be very disciplined with my training, but I don’t have that same fire I did when I was 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and then if you have, you know, I’m relatively well-off, but if you have 100 million dollars or whatever he has in the bank, and you see him on his private yacht everywhere and you think that’s gotta be hard for him to want to train hard?

“And I think that’s what we saw in the Dustin fight. He looked good for 5-ish minutes or so and then Dustin started eating up those legs and put him out in the second round.”

McGregor vs. Poirier 3 predictions

In their last fight, Poirier implemented two very important tools. The left calf kick, which broke down Conor’s roots, and the right check hook. The latter being effective for two reasons – one, because it forced McGregor to shift his weight to his left, onto the compromised leg in order to balance on impact, and two; because it is both offensive and defensive. Along with the punch, it also leaves Poirier’s shoulder protecting his chin from McGregor’s left hand.

At UFC 264, I do not believe that going into the fight with this same game plan will be enough. Look for Poirier to feint the takedown throughout the fight in order to set up his strikes. Although unable to do much with it, Poirier was able to take McGregor down in their second fight, and with that in the back of McGregor’s mind, it would do Poirier well to exploit it. Poirier should consistently mix it up between the head, body, and legs.

Conor McGregor has one of the most dangerous left hands in the game. He is so fast, accurate and good at timing, that it is rare that he totally misses. However, when he does miss it leaves an opening, due to the fact that he over-extends in order to accentuate reach and power. These are the moments the Poirier has to make him pay for that over-extension.

McGregor is also a much better technical grappler than people give him credit for. He was able to chain fairly impressive takedown defense even against Khabib early. However, his grappling work has a lot of thought behind it, he has an understanding but it’s a secondary element to his striking. At a point in the fight, fatigue forces movements to be dictated more by instinct than thought, which is where his reaction time on the ground increases significantly.

I think that McGregor’s best strategy would be to utilize his front leg kicks. This keeps his front leg light so as to absorb less impact when kicked, and it also keeps Poirier working at a further distance than in their first fight. Opening that fight with a lead hook kick established Conor’s weapons from a distance one step further than Poirier’s preferred boxing range, a distance I believe Conor is more comfortable in than the Louisiana native.

However, I think that while this will once again create success for the Irishman early, The Diamond will pour it on as the fight progresses and eventually break down McGregor’s mind and body in the later rounds. Conor is very dangerous to meet early when he is sharp, so Poirier has to capitalize on those moments where he is stunned or off-balance and make them matter. By investing in breaking down his body, legs, and cardio, I think these moments come more often and Poirier gets it done.

Official prediction: Dustin Poirier to win by TKO (Round 5)

Conor, Dustin, Dustin, Conor, I’ve flipped and flopped on my prediction for weeks. McGregor won round 1, Poirier’s leg kicks debilitated McGregor, McGregor tagged Poirier, Poirier took McGregor down, McGregor taking a more karate approach, and Poirier being the more successful lightweight.

All of these are interesting, important, and impactful variables to consider when handicapping the trilogy. But, an angle that I don’t think is getting a balanced analysis is the mentality of these foes. Many people are suggesting that McGregor may be soft now that he is a multimillionaire. That lack of an edge is deadly inside the octagon. But, is it really accurate?

A poor kid from Ireland fighting to survive is not just a Hollywood story; but, many argue, is the environment that bred a killer. Now that he has money, fame, and a more than comfortable lifestyle, those same people argue that McGregor has lost his edge. My question is, was it the environment or the mindset that created a killer? During the hardships of his life, few people were there for McGregor and even fewer people believed in him. That underdog mentality is a powerful motivator. So, consider for a moment that the environment didn’t breed a killer; rather, being alone, on an island, and doubted by most is what created one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC.

Poirier is uncharacteristically vocal and confident, Vegas has Poirier as the favorite, and many analysts say the “sharp money” is on Poirier. Everyone, for the first time in a very long time, is publicly doubting “The Notorious.” Since before his rise to fame, McGregor has not had the doubted, unsupported, and underdog mentality that he likely has headed into UFC 264. You’ll likely hear leading up to this fight that McGregor’s environment of fame and fortune has made him soft. But, if it really is the mindset, not the environment, that makes him a killer, we could be in for a special show come Saturday night.

I do think, looking at blind resumes, Vegas would have Poirier at a -180 or higher. He’s 13-2-1 as a UFC lightweight, his only recent loss came to the arguable GOAT in Khabib, and he just beat this same opponent seven months ago. That all being said, I think there is real merit in recognizing that, in their last matchup, McGregor won round 1, got up from the takedown quickly, really tagged Poirier, and has a game plan to neutralize the leg kicks- a karate approach that McGregor has naturally and successfully implemented in the past. Poirier’s game plan is to replicate the previous fight, walk away with the bag, and likely a championship fight. Meanwhile, McGregor has adjustments to make. I think if McGregor can make those adjustments and his mentality, not his environment, causes his hunger, he’ll be the better man on Saturday night.
